United to wait until summer to bring in goalkeeping talent who can “become one of the best” – report

Manchester United have yet to make an approach for Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier.

Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir have both hit the headlines for the wrong reasons recently as they have had poor Decembers.

United’s first choice keeper started the season well but he made high profile errors against Nottingham Forest and Viktoria Plzen, as well as conceding directly from a corner last time out versus Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The Red Devils have since been linked to other keepers to increase competition in the goalkeeping department such as Gregor Kobel and Senne Lammens.

Another keeper that has been linked to the Red Devils for a long time is Meslier from rivals Leeds United.

TEAMtalk has reported that despite the interest, United have not yet made an approach for the 24 year old.

Despite his inconsistent form “Manchester United and Arsenal have both reportedly shown interest” in the keeper.

Interestingly the website insist that Amorim is “very happy with current Man Utd keeper Andre Onana and has no intention of bringing in a new number one.”

Nonetheless, there is the real possibility that Bayindir could leave to pursue greater first team opportunities but this is more likely to take place in the summer than in January.

“Arsenal are in a similar situation in that Mikel Arteta firmly backs David Raya as his first-choice shot stopper. They could also look to bring in a new number two next summer but sources say that there has been no approach from either Man Utd or Arsenal for Meslier to date.”

Meslier has Premier League experience, spending three years with Leeds United in the top division and six seasons in total in Yorkshire.

He is well thought of in the Championship and he has been described as someone who can “become one of the best keepers in the world in a few years and fight for a place as the French number one.”
