United star suffers fresh setback in legal battle – report

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire is reportedly on track to be disappointed again in his bid to clear his name in court. Greek court case Maguire was convicted of attacking and attempting to bribe police officers in 2020 during a family vacation in the Greek island of Mykonos. He was given a prison sentence of 21 months and 10 days, which was suspended due to the charges being misdemeanours and the court’s recognition of his clean criminal record. The United star was convicted alongide his brother Joe, who was also handed a suspended 13-month sentence. The suspects spent two nights in police cells following the brawl, which is said to have kicked off when rival supporters taunted Maguire while he was enjoying time with his loved ones. It’s alleged that his sister, Daisy, was targeted. Maguire was accused of attempting bribe law enforcers after being taken to Mykonos’s police station after the fight. Maguire denied all accusations and has been steadfast that there was no wrongdoing on his part. He has been looking forward to his day in court but has been frustrated, with the case postponed four times over various reasons, including a countrywide lawyers’ strike and most recently, because legal documents had not been translated into English. The hearing in Syros, Greece was pushed to March 4, 2026 but according to the Daily Mail, it’s possible that it will be postponed for a fifth time. Maguire setback The newspaper reports, “March 4 has been slated and, once again, Maguire’s defence team will be ready to go to court to clear his name as we approach the sixth anniversary of his arrest on a family holiday to Mykonos.” “But the retrial has been postponed four times so far – most recently in October – and there is every chance it will be again, according to sources.” The Daily Mail add that there is a chance that the case will fail to go on trial at all because the statute of limitations in Greece takes effect after eight years, in August 2028. Maguire has been in fine form for United this season and has kicked up a few extra levels under caretaker boss Michael Carrick. He produced another solid performance on Monday evening as United beat Everton 1-0 at the Hill Dickinson Stadium. United return to action on Sunday when they host Crystal Palace.
