Manchester United came away from Molineux yesterday with an impressive 4-1 win against Wolverhampton Wanderers. The Red Devils took the lead but managed to allow an equaliser just before half-time. Three unanswered second-half goals gave United the victory, which saw them move up to sixth in the table. Star of the show United had numerous impressive performances on the night, including Mason Mount. Nonetheless, it was their captain, Bruno Fernandes, who stole the spotlight with two goals and an assist. The Portuguese midfielder followed up a strong month in November, during which he was nominated for the Premier League Player of the Month award. Impressive statistic Fernandes’ evening was even more impressive as he joined rare company in Premier League history. TalkSPORT report that, “the Portugal international became just the fifth player ever in the Premier League to assist a goal in five consecutive away matches.” Fernandes’ streak began in the away victory at Liverpool, when he crossed for Harry Maguire to head home the winner in front of a stunned Anfield crowd. He also set up Casemiro against Nottingham Forest and Matthijs de Ligt for a late equaliser against Tottenham Hotspur. Fernandes also created Mason Mount’s goal away to Crystal Palace and, of course, provided a delicious cross for the Englishman last night. The only other Premier League players to assist in five consecutive league games are Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, Gerard Deulofeu for Everton in 2015, Cesc Fabregas for Chelsea in 2014/2015, and Muzzy Izzet for Leicester City in 2003. He will have a chance to register an assist in six consecutive away games when United travel to Villa Park to take on Aston Villa on Sunday, 21st December. Fernandes is now the Premier League’s top assist maker for this season, and only Michael Olise and Lamine Yamal have created more goals this season in the European Assist rankings.
