United set to complete first January signing of spectacular left back, medical scheduled – report

Manchester United are edging closer to securing the services of Diego León, a highly rated 17-year-old left-back from Paraguay’s Cerro Porteño.

The player is set to travel to England this weekend for his medical examination, as reported by Paraguayan media outlets Versus and La Nación.

The transfer agreement will see United pay Cerro Porteño $5 million, along with performance-related bonuses.

However, León’s official registration with United will not occur until he turns 18 in April, in compliance with FIFA regulations.

He will remain with Cerro Porteño for the first half of 2025 before joining United for their pre-season preparations in the summer.

His upcoming visit to Manchester is viewed as a key part of his adaptation process. The 17 year old will not only undergo medical tests but also get a firsthand experience of the facilities at Old Trafford and Carrington.

The teenager’s performances at club and international levels have already demonstrated his potential, and the club is optimistic about his development under their guidance.

Blessed with extraordinary pace and physicality, León excels at advancing into the final third, delivering dangerous crosses, and even finding himself on the end of attacking plays.

His technical ability allows him to maintain close control at high speeds, making him a constant threat in offensive transitions.

Comparisons to Marcelo are natural, given León’s propensity for prioritising attacking contributions over defensive solidity.

However, his defensive game remains a work in progress, with moments of rash decision-making and lapses in positioning occasionally marring his performances.

What sets León apart is his potential to grow into a well-rounded player.

With Man United’s resources and coaching expertise, he has the opportunity to develop his defensive instincts and tactical awareness, ensuring he can recover effectively and balance his attacking flair with solid backline duties.
