United roar to huge 3-1 victory over Aston Villa to take charge of Champions League race

Manchester United welcomed Aston Villa to Old Trafford in a crucial matchup in the race for Champions League qualification. First half The opening 10 minutes were a cagey affair, with Villa dominating possession but neither team threatening the goal. United’s first real threat came after 17 minutes when Matheus Cunha beat the Villa full-back for pace and whipped in a dangerous ball that just escaped Amad in the box. The home side kept up the pressure, and a teasing cross by Diogo Dalot was guided out by the Villans’ defence. The Red Devils almost took the lead through a header from Amad, but Emiliano Martinez pulled off a stunning stop to keep the scores level. Villa responded, and John McGinn dug out a shot from just outside the area, but it was always going wide. United’s clearest chance arrived when Bruno Fernandes picked out Dalot, but the Portugal international failed to keep his composure and blasted over from inside the area when he really should have hit the target. Villa attacked dangerously, but Leny Yoro pulled off a world-class, goal-saving tackle to stop Ollie Watkins from surely opening the scoring. United raced up the pitch, and Fernandes’ dipping shot drifted just wide of Martinez’s goal. The first half came to an end with the scores level at 0-0. Second half United started the second half with an upbeat tempo, and Amad had an effort that ballooned over after good combination work with Bryan Mbeumo. The Red Devils kept up the pace, and Fernandes played Mbeumo through on goal, but his effort was well stopped by Martinez. Michael Carrick’s side finally got their reward when Casemiro headed in Fernandes’ corner to give United what could be a potentially massive lead. Villa naturally stepped up the intensity, and Tyrone Mings headed over from a free kick when left alone in the penalty area. Dalot once again broke the Villa defensive line, but he could only shoulder the ball into Martinez’s hands after a fantastic ball by Casemiro. The visitors were beginning to find more space in the United midfield, and Senne Lammens made a smart save from Amadou Onana. United switched off once more, and Ross Barkley swept in Villa’s equaliser. VAR looked at a potential offside for Onana, but it was not given and the away side were level. The Red Devils reacted positively, though, and Fernandes pulled the strings again with a stunning assist. His first-time ball put Matheus Cunha through on goal, and he made no mistake with a great finish past Martinez. 2-1 United. The Red Devils pushed forward and great work by Cunha down the left resulted in the ball being played to Benjamin Sesko whose deflected effort gave United a two-goal cushion. The Slovenian was given another great chance when Fernandes played another stupendous through ball to him but he inexplicably tried to square the ball to Kobbie Mainoo when it looked better to shoot. Amad had an effort deep into added time but it was well blocked by the Villa defence. Morgan Rogers had the last attempt for the visitors but his shot from outside the penalty area went tamely wide. The second half came to an end and United secured what could be a vital three points in the race for the Champions League.
