United reignite interest in 29-yo star after Club World Cup exploits, deal could be sealed for €7.4m – report

Manchester United have renewed their interest in Botafogo goalkeeper John Victor, as per reports.

Last month, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming United are eyeing a move for John, but the suggestions of a move to Old Trafford quickly simmered down.

However, the Brazilian’s exploits in the Club World Cup has once again raised the eyebrows of United officials.

According to journalist André Hernan (via Sport Witness), United’s scout watched the Botafogo star against Paris Saint-Germain and Palmeiras.

The 29-year-old delivered a resilient performance against the Champions League winners and kept a clean sheet in his side’s remarkable 1-0 win.

However, it was his imposing presence between the sticks against Palmeiras late in June that truly “caught attention”.

Palmeiras knocked Botafogo out of the competition but John did enough to put himself back on United’s transfer wish list.

As per reports in Brazil, United are preparing for Andre Onana’s departure and John is being considered as a potential replacement for the Cameroon international.

The ex-Inter Milan star has frequently delivered inconsistent performances over the last two seasons in England.

It is understood that John’s release clause, believed to be €7.4m, has played a key role in reigniting United’s interest.

It must be noted that multiple reports in England have suggested Onana intends to fight for his place under Ruben Amorim next season, making the likelihood of an exit remote.

However, considering John’s bargain price tag, it would make sense for United to bring in the Brazilian shot-stopper as Onana’s competition for the starting spot, especially as Altay Bayındır has proven to be an underwhelming second-choice option.
