United ready to replace one of Ten Hag’s best signings with 30-yo Atletico star – report

Manchester United are following Juan Musso as they look to find a replacement for Andre Onana, as per reports.

Erik ten Hag’s tenure gave United two trophies but as far as his squad building is concerned, the Dutchman’s reign was disastrous, to say the least.

His two most expensive signings, Antony and Casemiro, have spent most of their time away from the starting lineup over the last 12 months. The Brazilian winger has now been loaned out to Real Betis and United are adamant to part ways with the veteran midfielder.

The likes of Lisandro Martinez and Andre Onana are considered starters at the club. However, the Argentine’s injury struggles and Onana’s tendency to make frequent errors have now put question marks over the futures of his popular signings as well.

United reunited Ten Hag with ex-Ajax goalkeeper Onana, signing him from Inter Milan in 2023 in a big-money deal to replace David de Gea, who was criticised for his lack of technical ability in possession.

Onana’s arrival, however, has done little to improve the side’s build-up play. Further, his erratic style of shot-stopping and lack of dominance in the box has made the Red Devils very vulnerable in set-piece situations.

Accordingly, it is suggested that the United board are already looking to find the Cameroon international’s alternative.

As per Fichajes, United have set their sights on Musso, who is currently on loan at Atletico Madrid from Atalanta.

It is considered that the Argentine goalkeeper “fits the profile” the club’s hierarchy are looking for Ruben Amorim’s squad.

The outlet add that the 30-year-old’s experience in European football and his ability to perform in tense situations have impressed the Premier League giants who could “present an offer in the coming weeks.”

United’s alleged interest in Musso is interesting as he has only made eight appearances for Atletico this term, failing to pose any serious challenge to Jan Oblak, who remains Diego Simeone’s number one.

Musso might not be the answer to United’s concerns but if Onana doesn’t improve, the Mancunians should explore the market for a more reliable goalkeeper ahead of the new season.
