United prodigy tearing things up for national team, he’s hammering Amorim’s door down for next season

Manchester United’s prolific young goalscorer Chido Obi struck his second of the competition to fire Denmark U20s to the semi-finals of the Maurice Revello Tournament.

The 17-year-old has been in fine form for his nation in the international youth competition, where he has come up with two goals and an assist in the three group stage matches.

His latest opened the scoring against Japan U20s today, the leggy centre-forward hounding the goalkeeper into an error and tapping home into an open goal.

It’s exactly the sort of high-energy pressing which United manager Ruben Amorim demands from his players, and bodes well for Obi’s first-team chances next season.

Success in France follows an impressive performance in United’s otherwise underwhelming post-season tour of Asia, where Obi scored twice in a 3-1 win over Hong Kong.

The youngster is still very raw, but has shown glimpses of a special talent which deserves to be given a chance in the first-team next season.

United are famously on the hunt for a top-quality centre-forward following their diabolical season in front of goal last time out.

The Red Devils are hot on the trail of established names such as Napoli’s Victor Osimhen and Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres, but Amorim will doubtless be keeping a keen eye on Obi, who was handed minutes towards the end of the season.

Fellow Dane Rasmus Hojlund is in an almost entirely opposite position; after a woeful campaign in front of goal saw him score just four league goals he could be on his way out of Old Trafford with Inter Milan reportedly interested.

Following the 3-0 triumph over Japan U20s, Denmark U20s will face Saudi Arabia U23s in the semi-final of the Maurice Revello Tournament on Friday.

Obi’s United team-mate Sekou Kone is also in action in the competition for Mali and has supplied two assists, but his side haven’t done enough to progress past the group stage.

Elsewhere it’s been a productive spell of international football for United players, with Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot winning the Nations League with Portugal and young James Scanlon scoring for Gibraltar against the Faroe Islands.
