Manchester United’s striker situation is far from resolved despite a summer of major changes.
United prioritised the signing of a new striker heading into the summer transfer window. They brought in Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig and loaned out Rasmus Hojlund to Napoli.
Joshua Zirkzee seems to be next in line to leave Old Trafford, having failed to impress Ruben Amorim. The Dutchman is thought to have attracted interest from Serie A clubs, and his departure could open the door for another centre forward arrival.
Manchester United set their sights on Retegui
According to Fichajes, Mateo Retegui has emerged as a firm target for United.
The Argentina-born Italian currently plies his trade in Saudi Arabia, having joined Al-Qadsiah from Atalanta in the summer in a deal worth more than £56 million (€64.3m).
Before leaving Atalanta, the 26-year-old forward finished as the top scorer in Serie A last season with 25 goals. This term, the Italy international has three goals to his name in just four Saudi Pro League appearances.
Retegui, who is excellent at attacking space and clinical in front of the net, was also the 2022 Argentine Primera División top goalscorer.
It is claimed that the Premier League clubs are keeping a close eye on his performance despite his exit from Europe.
United could pay a significant fee for Retegui
Sesko has had a promising start to his tenure in Manchester. The 22-year-old Slovenian has already bagged two goals in the Premier League and has linked up well with his new teammates.
However, Sesko is still relatively inexperienced, and letting him shoulder the responsibility of leading United’s attack on his own may prove to be detrimental to his development.
United are looking for a proven goalscorer to lead their line, and have accordingly added Retegui to their list of striker targets.
The Spanish outlet claim United could spend somewhere between €50m and €60m in order to secure his services. Whether that will be enough to convince Al-Qadsiah remains unclear.
