United plan audacious attempt to snatch €50m dream attacker from Chelsea’s grasp – report

Manchester United are closely monitoring the situation of Olympique Lyonnais winger Malick Fofana, with the 20-year-old emerging as a top talent in this summer’s transfer market.

The Belgian international has attracted interest from several Premier League clubs, but Chelsea have taken an early step by making a verbal enquiry to the Ligue 1 club.

According to L’equipe, United are understood to be weighing up their own approach.

Lyon are said to value the player at more than €50 million.

Fofana’s profile fits the vision of head coach Ruben Amorim as the club enters a transitional phase.

He joined Lyon from Gent in January 2024 and has three years left on his contract.

The Belgian enjoyed a breakout 2024–25 campaign, scoring eleven goals and adding six assists in 41 appearances across all competitions.

That included six goals during Lyon’s run to the Europa League quarter-finals, a sequence that drew increased attention from scouts across Europe.

Chelsea’s interest is concrete, but far from exclusive. United are believed to be assessing their options, particularly as they look to reshape their attack ahead of a summer of expected player sales.

Fofana’s age and output place him among the most coveted attacking prospects in Europe.

United know they may need to act swiftly if they wish to prevent a rival club from securing his signature.

For now, Chelsea lead the race. But with the window still in its early stages, the situation remains open, and United could yet make their move.
