United open to surprise offer for “generational” superstar who has made his future intentions clear – report

Manchester United’s struggles last season were not only due to the lack of goals, but also because of the errors made by their goalkeepers.

Andre Onana was culpable for some massive howlers, both in the Premier League as well as in Europe. His backup, Altay Bayindir, fared little better.

The Cameroonian has missed the whole of pre-season this time around due to injury, but remains confident of playing in the season opener against Arsenal.

The Turkish international looked shaky during the US leg of pre-season, and has been linked with an exit. Even Onana might depart on loan, with permanent offers not materialising thus far.

Goalkeeper needed

Ruben Amorim would love an upgrade in goal, with Emiliano Martinez and Gianluigi Donnarumma among the high-profile names linked with a move to Old Trafford.

United’s loan attempt for the World Cup winner was rejected swiftly, and they have since moved on to the Champions League winner.

Paris Saint-Germain are demanding a huge €50 million for the Italian superstar, a fee no team has come close to matching despite interest from Chelsea and Manchester City.

There were reports that the Red Devils were preparing an opening offer of £26 million (€30 million), with the Parisian giants already bringing in Lucas Chevalier as the ex-AC Milan star’s replacement.

The “generational” goalie has made it clear that he will depart the Parc des Princes this summer, but with no resolution in sight, Givemesport has suggested United could place a cheeky loan bid.

Gianluigi Donnarumma on loan?

“Manchester United are open to signing Paris Saint-Germain outcast Gianluigi Donnarumma in a loan deal this summer, GIVEMESPORT sources understand.

“Donnarumma was key as the French side won the treble in 2024/25, but the club have brought in Lucas Chevalier as their new number one goalkeeper, and are looking to move the Italian on this summer as he is now in the final year of his £300,000-a-week contract.

“Any loan deal for the former AC Milan stopper would mean PSG need to change their stance on a loan move though, as PSG are not currently open to that situation. However, the player is disappointed with the way he has been dealt with this summer and it’s possible he could push for an exit on his own terms.

“However, there is a threat that any loan move could fall apart if another club made an offer to sign the player permanently instead, as that is PSG’s preferred option.”

Does not make sense

While the above report hints at a low-cost operation that will, no doubt, excite fans, a reality check is in order.

The goalkeeper’s current deal expires next summer, and a loan effectively means PSG earn nothing from the deal and lose him on a free. That is also why an option or obligation will not work. Such a deal hardly makes financial sense.

They might as well agree a mutual termination or earn a sizeable loan fee from the deal. None of which is explicitly implied in the report.

It is more likely he leaves permanently, and whether United can cough up the money needed will be intriguing to see. His wages of €244,808 gross per week, excluding bonuses (via capology) is another major stumbling block as INEOS are currently trying to trim their bloated wage bill.
