United now frontrunners to land €50m Serie A sensation as selling club eye replacement – report

Atalanta have begun exploring replacements for Marco Carnesecchi, giving Manchester United renewed encouragement in their pursuit of the highly rated Italian goalkeeper.

Carnesecchi was a central figure in Atalanta’s season, anchoring the side with a series of composed performances that caught the attention of Italy’s new head coach Gennaro Gattuso and recruiters at Old Trafford.

While no formal bid has yet been made, United’s interest is well established.

We recently covered a story suggesting United’s desire to sign the Italian as a replacement for Andre Onana.

Sources close to the situation suggest a bid in the region of €45–50 million (£38–42m) could prompt a serious discussion in Bergamo.

Anticipating such a development, Atalanta have already identified potential successors.

According to tuttoatalanta, Elia Caprile, set to be redeemed by Napoli after a season with Cagliari, has emerged as a top candidate. Scouts from Atalanta have monitored the 23 year old closely in recent months..

Juventus are also following Caprile’s situation, but Atalanta’s close ties with Cagliari could work in their favour.

Veteran keeper Mattia Perin is another name under discussion.

His future is also being discussed by newly promoted Sassuolo, but the Nerazzurri’s continental status could be a decisive factor.

For Man United, the fact that Atalanta are making preparatory moves underscores a growing openness to Carnesecchi’s exit.

The club continues to weigh options as part of a broader goalkeeping reshuffle.

Onana has had an underwhelming couple of seasons at Old Trafford and Ruben Amorim could look to move him on and bring in his own number one.

It is to be seen how high is a goalkeeper in the list of summer priorities for United and Amorim.
