United make surprise decision after missing out on Quenda, move could frustrate Amorim – report

Manchester United are expected to revise their transfer plans after missing out on Geovany Quenda.

At this point, it is no secret that wing-backs are very important to Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-3 system, as they are responsible for creating width and supporting the forward line in possession.

The same was underlined when United spent around £30million to sign Patrick Dorgu from Leece in the winter window. The Dane has instantly become one of Amorim’s most important players at Old Trafford.

Multiple reports claimed that Amorim’s next target to strengthen United’s wide area was Quenda and it was suggested that the Sporting CP sensation would follow his ex-manager to Manchester.

However, Chelsea stunned the Red Devils last week, as it emerged that the Blues have agreed to sign the Portuguese talent.

According to GIVEMESPORT, Chelsea’s move has “forced” United to change their plans for the summer transfer window.

It is understood that United will not prioritise signing a like-for-like alternative to Quenda.

Instead, their aim will be to land an exciting talent who has “similar attacking traits instead of finding someone who can feature in exactly the same position.”

Quenda successfully featured as a right-sided wing-back under Amorim in Lisbon and has recently played as a winger. The Mancunians now want a player who has the potential to offer similar creativity rather than a wide man capable of playing at wing-back.

Considering how important wing-backs are for Amorim, the decision might frustrate the United head coach. Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui have struggled to effectively contribute in that role.

It is added that the club’s decision could result in Amad Diallo being viewed as a viable option for the position out wide.

The Ivorian right-winger, however, thrived as a right-sided number 10 in the new system.
