United looking to right the wrongs of miserable decade on Merseyside

Manchester United travel to Anfield this Sunday to take on Liverpool in a blockbuster Premier League tie.

The two North-West giants have played one another 244 times.

The Red Devils have won 91 of those matches, while losing 82 in their history.

There have been 71 draws between the two clubs.

Here are three things to look forward to ahead of an exhilarating game.

Anfield nightmare

United’s last two trips to Liverpool’s stadium have ended up in positive draws.

In fact, last season they were unlucky not to take all three points as Harry Maguire skied over an effort in the dying seconds of the match.

Nonetheless, there is no getting away from the fact that United have not won at Anfield since January 2016 under Louis van Gaal.

This means that the Red Devils are winless in their last nine visits.

According to The BBC, “Liverpool could become just the second side to avoid defeat in 10+ successive Premier League home games against the Red Devils, after Chelsea (10 from Aug 2002 to Feb 2012).”

United looking to achieve rare feat

Beating the champions away is one of the toughest things in league football.

The Red Devils haven’t beaten the defending league champions away from home in consecutive seasons since 1906-07 when they beat Liverpool and 1907-08 when they defeated Newcastle United.

Ruben Amorim’s side defeated Manchester City 2-1 last season at the Etihad and a win at Anfield this season could see United break this 99 year curse.

“Indeed, the Portuguese manager could become only the third manager to win both of his first two Premier League away games at reigning champions, after Manuel Pellegrini and Antonio Conte.”

United looking to end away day hell in style

A win at Anfield is always cause for celebration but it would mean even more to this side.

According to The BBC, “Manchester United are winless in their last eight Premier League away games (two draws and six losses) since beating Leicester City 3-0 in March.”

This season has seen a 1-1 draw with Fulham and defeats to Manchester City and Brentford.

Luckily United’s home form has been better with three wins from four.

The Red Devils last went on a longer run without a victory away from home in September 1989 under Alex Ferguson when they didn’t manage three points in 11 straight games.
