Manchester United will be looking to bolster their engine room in 2026, but turning that ambition into reality will be far easier said than done. Several midfielders have already been linked with a move to Old Trafford, and one name that continues to surface is Adam Wharton. Well regarded as a deep‑lying playmaker or “controller”, Wharton has drawn comparisons to Michael Carrick. Much like the United legend, the Crystal Palace man boasts a superb passing range, calmness in possession, positional intelligence, and the ability to dictate the tempo from the base of midfield. Some believe he is exactly what a Ruben Amorim midfield would thrive on, and few would argue with that assessment. However, while this is a deal United should look to wrap up in the new year, it is unlikely to be a smooth ride. For starters, Palace are determined not to lose him and are reportedly keen to tie him down to a new contract. Then there is the small matter of competition; virtually every top club in England is said to be circling. Chelsea lead the Wharton race Speaking of clubs with eyes on Wharton, a fresh update from Spain has added fuel to the fire. According to Fichajes: “Adam Wharton has emerged as one of the top transfer targets, and Chelsea are leading the race to sign him. “Chelsea have already identified Wharton as a medium‑term priority and are managing his signing while keeping a close eye on the strong competition looming over the talented midfielder.” United still firmly in the mix While Chelsea‘s prioritising the Wharton swoop may appear to dent United’s hopes, the Red Devils remain firmly in the race. Even if the Blues are prepared to spend big, they face their own hurdles. “[The Blues] face a double task if they want to secure Adam Wharton: first, negotiate a fee with Crystal Palace that meets the London club’s expectations; second, structure their squad to make room for the midfielder without disrupting the dressing room,” Fichajes added. United, in contrast, could benefit if Chelsea’s interest forces Palace to name their price. Still, they will be hoping the West Londoners struggle to create space in their already congested midfield. Given how stacked the world champions’ engine room is, INEOS will also be hoping a move to Stamford Bridge does not tempt Wharton. For United, if they can find a way to raise the necessary funds, they should be ready to go toe‑to‑toe with any rival in the race for Wharton. Their midfield may have found some stability of late, but it still needs strengthening, and what better way to do that than by landing the next Michael Carrick? Wharton could take them to the next level. Featured image Matt McNulty via Getty Images The Peoples Person has been one of the world’s leading Man United news sites for over a decade.
