United legend beats Liverpool legend in race to become manager of lowly Carlisle United – report

Manchester United’s period of incredible success under Sir Alex Ferguson created many a hero at the Theatre of Dreams with the legendary Scot building multiple league winning sides.

Ferguson let an indelible mark on the majority of his players throughout his two-and-a-half decades at the club with a raft of them making their way into football management after hanging up their boots.

One of whom is former United striker Mark Hughes, who has returned to football management by accepting arguably the biggest challenge of his managerial career to date.

As reported by The Mirror, Hughes has been named as the new manager of Carlisle United who are currently at the bottom of the League Two table.

Hughes’ last managerial role was at Bradford City where he spent a year from 2022 to 2023, in what was his first job outside of the Premier League.

Therefore, the decision to take over the reins at Carlisle comes as somewhat of a surprise given Hughes’ previous high-profile roles and standing in the game.

The 61-year-old takes over from Mike Williamson, who was sacked after a wretched run of form that culminated in an embarrassing 1-5 thrashing at home to Swindon Town at the weekend.

The run of five defeats from six since the turn of the year has left Carlisle five points from safety and facing a fight to stay in the football league.

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard was also in the running for the post with Carlisle’s American owners looking for a big name to provide a shot in the arm to change the club’s fortunes.

Hughes will link up with United striker Joe Hugill, who is on loan with The Blues until the end of the season.

Hugill will no doubt be excited to learn from one of the greatest strikers to have played the game and Hughes will hope to have a big enough impact on his new squad to keep Carlisle in the division.

Hughes. lovingly called Sparky, bagged 163 goals for United in 467 appearances with his all-action style impressing fans and he will go down as one of Old Trafford’s greats.

The Welshman’s first game at his new club is a trip to playoff hopefuls Grimsby Town this coming Saturday.
