Manchester United caretaker manager Michael Carrick has enjoyed a tremendous start to his reign, but that has not stopped the club from preparing for the future. The Red Devils appointed the Englishman as a temporary replacement for former head coach Ruben Amorim, who endured a tough 14-month stay at Old Trafford. The Portuguese head coach oversaw a 15th-placed finish in the Premier League last season and failed to improve results despite spending a small fortune last summer. At the turn of the year, the English giants decided that it was time for a fresh start and removed Amorim from the hot seat at the Theatre of Dreams. After much speculation, Carrick was handed the reins for the rest of the campaign, while United continue their search for their next permanent manager. The Englishman has registered six wins and one draw in his seven games in charge, and has taken his team to third in the Premier League table. However, with the likes of Carlo Ancelotti, Thomas Tuchel and Luis Enrique all but ruling themselves out of the race, the permanent appointment process is becoming more complicated. One man who has previously been linked with the job is current Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann, who was once called a “great coach” by Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni. Nagelsmann’s managerial history Nagelsmann started his managerial career at Hoffenheim, before moving to RB Leipzig in 2019. He arrived at Bayern Munich in the summer of 2021 and won the Bundesliga in his debut campaign. However, a series of mixed results ultimately prompted the Bavarian giants to part ways with the German manager in 2023, and he took charge of the German national team later that year. Largely considered one of the best young managers in the world, Nagelsmann was reportedly close to joining Chelsea in 2023 but the move never materialised. A previous report relayed by The Peoples Person stated that the German is ready to take charge at Old Trafford. An update on the matter has now emerged. Nagelsmann offered to United According to TEAMtalk, Nagelsmann has been offered to United by intermediaries. The report states: “Julian Nagelsmann has shown interest in taking the Manchester United job, with intermediaries putting his name forward for the role, while a Bundesliga-based boss is also now firmly in the frame, TEAMtalk can exclusively reveal.” The report adds that Borussia Dortmund manager Niko Kovac is also interested in the hot seat at Old Trafford. However, the Red Devils are likely to prefer a candidate with Premier League experience. “In addition, we understand Niko Kovac has shown interest in the top job at Old Trafford. However, we understand that the belief within Old Trafford is that INEOS are unlikely to appoint a manager without experience of English football and while their credentials are under consideration, neither is currently leading the race.” Carrick firmly in the race The report also acknowledges that Carrick is firmly in the race for the permanent job, adding: “Indeed, given the form United have shown since Carrick took charge, not to mention his unique handling of the players, affable demeanour in the media and a personality which is the polar opposite of Amorim, has seen Carrick placed firmly in control of the race.” “Nonetheless, other options will continue to be assessed, though as one well-informed source, whose identity has been protected to save their anonymity, told TEAMtalk: ‘They’re open-minded but unlikely to go for anyone without top-flight English experience, but they are assessing all options.’” “The hunt and investigation into the club’s next manager is being led by director of football Jason Wilcox, who is understood to have been finalising his reports on a shortlist of candidates.” Final Thoughts The search for United’s next permanent manager is gathering pace, although the longer Carrick’s glorious run continues, the harder it will be to turn him down. Should the Englishman manage a top-four finish this season, the calls to keep him permanently will grow stronger.
