Manchester United are holding secret talks over sensationally signing a legend.
Old Trafford departure
David de Gea left United in the summer of 2023 after spending 12 years at the club.
He won a Premier League trophy, an FA Cup, a Europa League and two league cups during his time in Manchester.
After not being offered a new deal, he left United and spent the entire 2023-2024 season without a club.
The Spaniard subsequently joined Fiorentina last year and enjoyed a successful return to regular football.
De Gea made an emotional return to Old Trafford last weekend when he played for Fiorentina in the pre-season Snapdragon Cup versus his former side, receiving warm applause from the home crowd.
Sensational return
United have been looking at goalkeeper options such as Senne Lammens and Emiliano Martinez this summer as both Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir have failed to convince Ruben Amorim’s coaching team.
The Sun report that United have been “making hush-hush checks about a remarkable return for keeper and club legend David de Gea.”
The article also adds that “the Red Devils have been tipped off that the Spaniard, 34, has a clause in his deal at Fiorentina — allowing him to leave for a relatively small sum.”
It is understood that “discreet background calls” are being made as De Gea made a good impression on his return to Manchester last week.
It is stated that United would ideally need to move on Onana or Bayindir to make space for his wages. Nonetheless, they “could still find a way to accommodate him” if a deal was cheap enough to seal a move.
Held in high regard
United fans clearly still hold the Spaniard in high regard and the feeling is mutual as De Gea commented on Instagram after the match.
He posted, “a magical moment for me and my family to come back to Old Trafford — my home. From the bottom of my heart — I want to say thank you for the reception — for all the love you showed me.”
De Gea also thanked fans for always being with him and interestingly teased that “our paths may cross again.”
