United in advance talks to move on young striker after disappointing first half of the season – report

Joe Hugill

With the winter transfer window now in full swing, despite limited activity thus far Manchester United are still expected to complete some business before the month’s end.

Given the need to move players on, United are reportedly happy to listen to offers for the majority of their first team stars and fringe players currently at the club.

Youngster Joe Hugill is one player expected to spend the remainder of the season away from Old Trafford with League Two outfit, Carlisle, in advanced talks.

As reported by the Manchester Evening News, The Blues are close to agreeing a loan deal for the striker who spent the first half of the season with Wigan Athletic.

Hugill has since been recalled by United after seeing his involvement with The Latics diminish since the start of the campaign.

The United man started the first six games for the League One side but struggled to nail down a first team spot and returned to Old Trafford this month.

Carlisle have apparently agreed personal terms and are set to take the 21-year-old to Brunton Park as they fight to stay in the Football League.

Former Newcastle United defender Mike Williamson is currently in charge at the club and sees Hugill as a perfect option to bolster his attacking numbers.

Carlisle are seven points adrift at the bottom of League Two and are red-hot favourites to be relegated to the National League.

Williamson needs all the help he can get to keep his side in the division and will desperately hope the Hugill move turns out to be an inspired one.

The switch is likely to be designed with the view of securing a permanent move rather than a route into the first team at Old Trafford given his lack of involvement under multiple regimes.

The Englishman is yet to feature for United since moving to Manchester from Sunderland in 2020.
