United icon tears into club’s signing of Sesko, claims he should have picked Newcastle instead

Manchester United icon Paul Scholes has given a worrying appraisal of imminent signing Benjamin Sesko.

United secure Sesko’s signature

Following a hotly contested battle with Newcastle for Sesko, United finally got their man, striking an agreement with RB Leipzig on Thursday afternoon.

Newcastle tabled a more lucrative offer for Sesko, but the striker’s desire to join United ultimately scuppered their bid.

A report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that the Magpies also presented Sesko with significantly higher wages than United, but this was still not enough to sway his stance.

The Slovenian has already had his medical and signed his United contract. He is set to be unveiled in front of the Old Trafford crowd on Saturday, just before the friendly against Fiorentina kicks off.

While anticipation over Sesko’s arrival grows, club legend Paul Scholes remains doubtful about the 22-year-old’s ability to thrive at United.

Speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate, Scholes suggested that United may be repeating the same mistake they made with Rasmus Hojlund two years ago.

Scholes on Sesko

Scholes said, “From the point of Sesko… he’ll have more chance at Newcastle to develop which he needs. Now to be a Manchester United centre-forward, as we’ve found with Hojlund, a 22-year-old kid, you’ve got to be ready.”

“It’s got to be now. And Hojlund just isn’t quite good enough for that as we’ve seen. But again, he’s not had a chance to be developed.”

“Going to Newcastle might have been the best thing for him, for two or three years.”

However, Scholes made it clear that he is fully aware why United remain a far more attractive option for players in comparison to Newcastle.

“Which club are going to be successful first? Are Man United going to win the league before Newcastle – if they ever do? Of course they are.”

“That’s why he wants to go there, but I’m saying, from a United point of view, is it the best bit of business? I still think you’re in the same boat as having Hojlund.”

United vs. Fiorentina kicks off at 12:45 BST.
