Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim’s post-match rant at Elland Road seems to have opened up a can of worms. He wants more control, both in terms of his tactics and transfers, while football director Jason Wilcox has urged him to switch to a back four while refusing to back him, given the team’s poor results. A power play has ensued, and it all points towards the Portuguese tactician potentially leaving his job soon. And as per Teamtalk, the Red Devils have prepared a contingency plan just in case, with two managers identified to come in and steady the ship. Contingency plans in place One is a short-term option in club legend Michael Carrick. He is a free agent, and knows the club inside out with the players having plenty of respect for him. He has proven himself at Middlesbrough, and was even an interim boss for three games once Ole Gunnar Solskjaer got sacked. The ex-England international has also been linked with the West Ham job. The long-term option could be Gareth Southgate. The INEOS hierarchy are fans of the way he managed the England senior team and he would be more than willing to take the job. “Manchester United have their own contingency plans in place should they part ways with Ruben Amorim, and they are aware which options are available to them, TEAMtalk can confirm. Short-term and long-term options “We can reveal that Man Utd director of football Jason Wilcox already has a list of potential replacements both short and long-term, which was first put together last year when Amorim was under severe pressure. “Amorim’s current deal is due to run for another 18 months but we can reveal that United’s hierarchy have been left shocked by the comments made by the Portuguese. “One of those, who would likely be a short-term option, is Michael Carrick. The former Middlesbrough man has previously served in the coaching set-up and is held in huge regard by the club. We are told that the club would like him to be involved again at some point in the future. “There is also Sir Gareth Southgate, who is someone that Ratcliffe remains a huge fan of. Wilcox too is believed to have huge respect for the former England boss, and he is currently available.” Yet another managerial blunder from INEOS Fans will not be too pleased if INEOS go the Southgate way after two seasons of playing a different style under Amorim. Safe to say that the co-owners have once again botched up the managerial process. Keeping Erik ten Hag and then replacing him with a polar opposite boss, only to now backtrack shows how clueless they are as well.
