United have agreed their first deal of the January window, medical also completed – report

The January transfer window is upon us, and Manchester United are already close to completing their first deal. A lack of incoming transfer activity saw Ruben Amorim lash out at Jason Wilcox, United’s director of football, and that ultimately cost him his job. But the Red Devils have been busy with outgoings, with The Manchester Evening News revealing that academy starlet Sam Mather has agreed to join Turkish side Kayserispor for an undisclosed fee. The Carrington graduate travelled to Turkiye for his medical on Wednesday. He is expected to join the club’s Antalya training camp after completing all formalities. Sam Mather joins Kayserispor Kayserispor had agreed personal terms with the 21-year-old in the summer while the Red Devils even agreed a fee and inserted a buyback clause. Only for the deal to go pear-shaped at the last hurdle. At 21, the left winger has clearly outgrown academy football, and is keen to test himself in a competitive senior environment. Kayserispor have been long-term admirers, and have beaten out competition from MLS clubs to land the highly-rated young ace. “Manchester United youngster Sam Mather is set to sign for Turkish club Kayserispor for an undisclosed fee. Mather was in talks to join Kayserispor in the summer, but the deal collapsed at the eleventh hour. Travelled to complete his medical “The Manchester Evening News reported last week that Kayserispor had submitted a fresh bid. Mather has been keen to kickstart his professional career after outgrowing academy football. He is scheduled to travel to Turkey on Wednesday to complete his move. đŸ¤ | Sam Mather, kendisini Kayserispor’a baÄŸlayan imzayı attı. pic.twitter.com/W8LvF1SBPK — Đ¼Ñ–Ñ‚Đ¾Â¹â¹â¶â¶ (@19mitoo66) January 1, 2026 “Mather has decided to leave his boyhood club in favour of a fresh challenge. The 21-year-old has a contract at Old Trafford until 2027, but he wants to compete in a professional environment.†There is no clarity regarding the fee as well as whether a buyback clause has been inserted this time around. He was called up to senior training on occasions by Amorim but his system did not favour natural wingers and hence, no opportunity ever came his way.
