United grant “heartbroken and in shock” duo extended leave as 15 other stars return for pre-season training – report

Manchester United have granted Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot extended leave after they attended the funeral of Liverpool star Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva over the weekend.

Jota and his brother passed away in a tragic car accident during the early hours of Thursday morning.

Fernandes and Dalot, who both ?lined up alongside Jota in the Portugal national team, attended the funeral on Saturday to pay their respects.

According to The Sun, Fernandes and Dalot were due to return to Carrington this week for pre-season training but the club has given them special permission to arrive much later.

A source told the newspaper, “Bruno and Diogo are heartbroken and in shock after attending the funeral. United’s players have rallied around them. They’ve been offered a week’s extended leave and counselling or support.”

“The pair played with Jota for ten years in the national side and won the Nations League together only a few weeks ago.”

After Jota’s death, Fernandes wrote on social media, “Friend, colleague and companion in a thousand battles. It is difficult to understand how it is possible for someone to leave so soon. May you and your brother find the peace you need to look after those you lost so soon and suddenly.”

“My condolences to your entire family.”

Dalot wrote, “Devastating..Much strength to the entire family.”

Meanwhile, a number of United stars returned to training at Carrington on Monday, including new signings Matheus Cunha and Diego Leon.

Cunha’s transfer was confirmed at the start of June while Leon’s arrival was announced just a few days ago.

Cunha and Leon were joined by Amad, Mason Mount, Noussair Mazraoui, Ayden Heaven, Joshua Zirkzee, Toby Collyer, Matthijs De Ligt and Kobbie Mainoo. The Mirror note than 15 players in total were present.
