United fans give damning assessment of team’s effort in horrendous cup defeat to Grimsby

Manchester United fans have given a damning verdict of their team’s performance versus Grimsby Town.

The Red Devils started the game in terrible fashion, going 2-0 down to the League Two side and thoroughly deserving to be in that position.

They did fight back with goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire in the second half but that only took the match to penalties.

United managed to lose that shootout 12-11 in ridiculous fashion and as a result, were dumped out of the Carabao Cup at the earliest stage.

The Peoples Person decided to ask fans who they thought the United man of the match was and the supporters gave a damning verdict.

Nobody

61% of respondents chose the option, “nobody deserves to win it” when asked who was their man of the match.

It is fair to say fans were less impressed when United’s players were outfought and outsmarted by League Two opposition.

Not only did Grimsby show much more effort, they frankly demonstrated much more quality on the ball until around the 70th minute when they clearly tired.

United players will know that they will need to do so much better against Burnley at the weekend if they are to win back a lot of fans.

Harry Maguire comes out with some credit

The England defender was part of a defence that often looked all at seas against fourth division opposition.

20% of readers nominated Maguire as the player who deserved the award the most.

Nonetheless, he did grab United’s late equaliser with a header, once again proving his attacking threat from set pieces.

He also confidently stuck away his penalty in the shootout, even if it was all in vain in the end.

Bryan Mbeumo

The Cameroonian came on as a half-time sub and grabbed United’s first goal with a well-taken solo effort.

Mbeumo was voted by 13% of the fans as the man of the match after his debut goal.

He also put away his first penalty in the shootout but sadly hit the crossbar with United’s 13th attempt.

Mbeumo was hardly at his sparkling best but he did show more threat than the majority of Ruben Amorim’s players.

Best of the rest

Second half substitute Matthijs de Ligt was awarded 3% of the vote as he was often seen more in an attacking sense than a defensive one during the half.

He also scored his penalty in the shootout but was involved in an incredible last-gasp miss with Benjamin Sesko that could have given United an undeserved win.

Finally Matheus Cunha won just 2% of the vote. He has impressed in his limited time at the club but had a poor night by his standards, failing to convert United’s fifth penalty that would have won the tie.

Proud owner of such niche shirts such as Kleberson, Eric Djemba-Djemba and Gary Neville. Grew up pretending to be Ruud van Nistelrooy and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the back garden, with little success.
