United facing blockbuster battle with familiar foe to land €30m “assist king” who looks to be on his way out – report

This summer will be critical for Manchester United’s rebuild. It will not just be about appointing the right manager but also equipping him with quality players who lay the perfect foundation for his United project. Well, according to the latest transfer rumours, one such quality addition the incoming permanent manager could be blessed with is the signing of Julian Ryerson. Ryerson has caught INEOS’ attention The Borussia Dortmund right-back has rightfully caught INEOS’ attention, with rave reviews circulating about his abilities. Intense, aggressive, and versatile, the 28-year-old full-back excels at bombing forward and delivering powerful crosses. He frequently gets into the opposition box, making him a major attacking threat, and that potency is reflected in his numbers, with 11 assists in just 22 league games this season. Great offensively, one may wonder whether he is any good defensively. Well, he is. Ryerson is solid at the back and difficult to beat in a one-on-one situation, a complete full-back in every sense. United likely see him as an upgrade on their current right-back options in Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui. It is why they are keen to move for him, but landing his signature will not be straightforward. Premier League battle for Dortmund star Initially, the big stumbling block was whether Dortmund would be willing to let him go at all. Now, however, that may no longer be the issue. Instead, the emerging concern is Newcastle United entering the race for Ryerson. The NUFC blog covering a Bild newspaper report claims: “Newcastle are in the mix to sign full-back Julian Ryerson, as Borussia Dortmund aim to balance their books ahead of the summer window.” The report further hints at why Ryerson, available for €30 million (£26m), could be on the move: “The Bundesliga giants’ loss to Atalanta in the Champions League play-offs has left them in a precarious financial situation, with some stars expected to be offloaded to fund further activity. And that’s set to include the 28-year-old Ryerson.” While Dortmund’s apparent willingness to cash in is a boost to United’s transfer hopes, the battle with Newcastle adds a fresh layer of complication. Sesko to United deja vu in Ryerson chase Last summer, the Magpies were willing to outbid United and hand Benjamin Sesko a hefty pay day, yet the striker still chose Old Trafford in the end. INEOS will be hoping history repeats itself, and that if it comes down to a straight fight between United and Newcastle, Ryerson sees Old Trafford as the more compelling destination.
