Manchester United will be without Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte for Newcastle United’s visit on Monday 30 December.
Fernandes was shown his third red card of the season during our 2-0 defeat against Wolves and will now serve a one-match ban, therefore missing the clash with Eddie Howe’s side.
Our no.8 was shown a yellow card in each half by Tony Harrington, as goals from Mathues Cunha and Hwang Hee-chan condemned United to defeat at Molineux.
Manager Ruben Amorim spoke about his captain in his post-match press conference.
“I am always frustrated with the red card, but it can happen as he always wants to go for the ball,” said Ruben when asked about our no.8’s sending off.
“It is not like he wants to stop the player with a yellow [card].
“He wanted to go for the ball, the guy got there first and there is a contact and that thing is tough on him also.”
Ugarte will join our skipper on the sidelines, after he picked up his fifth yellow card of the league season in the Midlands.
The Uruguayan was booked in the second half, for hauling down Goncalo Guedes as Wolves looked to break. He was substituted for Christian Eriksen shortly after, with 63 minutes played.
It was a bitter blow for the former PSG man who performed well during the first 45 minutes by quelling Wolves’s promising-looking attacks.
Newcastle, who beat fellow top-four hopefuls Aston Villa 3-0 earlier on Boxing Day, are our next opponents, in what is the final outing of 2024.
