United contacted over move for World Cup-winning Spanish midfielder, January deal could be on the table – report

Manchester United wanted to sign a versatile forward over the summer, but INEOS’s failure to offload out-of-favour attackers prevented any new arrival.

Both Joshua Zirkzee and Marcus Rashford were expected to leave in the summer. However, Michael Carrick has been forced to rely on them at the start of the campaign due to a lack of options.

Now, an opportunity to make things right mid-season has landed at the doors of Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox.

Manchester United contacted over Dani Olmo deal

According to TEAMtalk, Manchester United have been contacted and informed that a potential January deal for Dani Olmo could be on the table.

It is understood intermediaries have spoken to all of the Premier League’s Big Six about the Barcelona star’s availability.

“There have been no formal approaches at this stage, but some of the English clubs spoken to have shown tentative interest as intermediaries assess the market for the Barcelona star,” the report states. 

It is believed Barcelona continue to value Olmo highly, but “sources have indicated that the club are open to listening to the market and there are circumstances in which his departure could become a possibility.”

The 28-year-old has been handed just two La Liga starts by Hansi Flick, who is blessed with several elite attacking options.

It is alleged that there is growing confidence at Camp Nou that Fermin Lopez is ready to replace Olmo for the long term.

Could Dani Olmo replace Bruno Fernandes at Manchester United?

Olmo is capable of playing as a left-winger and centre-forward, but he mainly thrives as an attacking midfielder, a position currently occupied by Bruno Fernandes.

The Spain international, who has three league assists to his name this term, is a brilliant passer of the ball and has ferocious ball-striking in his locker. However, Olmo has struggled with frequent injury issues during his time at Barcelona.

Given his fitness record and the fact he has already become a squad player at Barca, United would be wise to stay away from any potential deal. The focus should be on finding a young and reliable number 10 to replace Fernandes.
