Manchester United are considering a loan proposal from Hull City for Toby Collyer, but a key decision must be made before the 22-year-old is allowed to leave Old Trafford, according to Fabrizio Romano. A Frustrating Campaign Collyer has endured a frustrating season after his loan spell with West Bromwich Albion was cut short by injury. The energetic midfielder joined West Bromwich Albion in the summer after a number of Championship clubs registered interest in securing his signature for the 2025/26 campaign. However, a promising start to life at the Hawthorns was curtailed when he suffered a muscle issue in October, just after earning his place in Ryan Mason’s side. Collyer’s rotten luck then continued as he picked up an even more significant injury in his calf in late November, ruling him out for eight weeks. He returned to Carrington to complete his rehabilitation. Over Christmas, the decision was then made by United to terminate the academy graduate’s loan with West Brom, given his struggles for regular minutes and the pressure Mason was under at that point, with the English coach eventually getting sacked this week. The Red Devils are currently reeling from their own head coach’s departure, as INEOS pulled the trigger on Ruben Amorim on Monday morning. The club are currently searching for a permanent caretaker to take the reins until the end of the season, while under-18s coach Darren Fletcher leads the senior side in the meantime. Amorim was understood to appreciate Collyer, despite his limitations on the ball. He is a willing runner and an astute tactician in midfield, despite not being a technician — attributes Amorim values. There was even one point last season where the Portuguese coach revealed Collyer was ahead of Casemiro in his midfield pecking order. However, Romano reports it is Amorim’s replacement — Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Michael Carrick are the two frontrunners — who will decide where Collyer will play in the second half of the season after Hull City tabled an offer, as United debate whether a return to the Championship is the best step. Tigers on the Hunt The Italian transfer expert reveals the Hull have “asked” to take Collyer on loan with the Tigers looking for reinforcements in midfield. 🚨🐯 Hull City have asked Man United for Toby Collyer’s loan until the end of the current season. Approval to be delayed until Man United decide on caretaker manager.” However, INEOS will delay a decision until the caretaker manager is appointed, indicating they will then have the final decision on whether Collyer departs or remains at Old Trafford. United’s midfield is the weakest part of the team, particularly from the perspective of hard yards — the type the 22-year-old dynamo offers in abundance. However, it would be a damning indictment on the current cohort of midfielders if a new manager felt a player who could not cement a place in a struggling Championship side was needed in his squad.
