United bid to extend 100% Easter Sunday record

Manchester United have a flawless record when it comes to playing league games on Easter Sunday.

It is something Ruben Amorim’s men will be striving to maintain when in-form Wolves come to Old Trafford this weekend.

While the visitors have never played on an Easter Sunday, this will be the fifth occasion that United have been in action on the day itself, with the home clash kicking off at 14:00 BST.

Let’s take a closer look at those four victories and then watch the highlights from each of them below.

Wes Brown and Nani both scored against Liverpool in a home win.

23/3/2008: United 3 Liverpool 0

A rampant win over our fiercest rivals was one to remember, as Sir Alex Ferguson’s side tightened our grip at the top of the table.

Although Javier Mascherano’s needless red card for dissent aided the cause, we were already 1-0 up at that stage, courtesy of Wes Brown’s opener.

Cristiano Ronaldo doubled the lead with a header and Nani thumped in the coup de grace.

8/4/2012: United 2 QPR 0

Again, the Reds were in first place, when entertaining a QPR side managed by former favourite Mark Hughes.

Shaun Derry was sent off for bringing down Ashley Young, with Wayne Rooney converting the penalty. Paul Scholes, at the ripe old age of 36, rifled a second past Paddy Kenny as United made it eight league wins on the spin, even if the season was to end in last-day heartache.

Ander Herrera discusses his man-marking job on Eden Hazard.

16/4/2017: United 2 Chelsea 0

Ander Herrera was the star of the show, not only man-marking danger man Eden Hazard to good effect, but finding the time to provide an assist and a goal in a fine victory over the league leaders.

Jose Mourinho’s side went ahead when Herrera’s inch-perfect through ball was expertly finished by Marcus Rashford in only the seventh minute. The Spanish midfielder then fired a deflected effort past Asmir Begovic to set the seal on an impressive performance.

4/4/2021: United 2 Brighton 1

The fourth in the series of wins and the fourth at home, although there were no fans inside Old Trafford to witness it. Ex-Red Danny Welbeck netted at the second attempt, after forcing a save out of Dean Henderson, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side bounced back.

Bruno Fernandes set up Rashford for a well-taken equaliser and Mason Greenwood dived to head the winner, with eight minutes remaining.
