Manchester United are reportedly shifting their focus to Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres following a breakthrough in negotiations for Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Matheus Cunha.
United are eyeing more than one addition in their attacking department ahead of the upcoming summer transfer window. In addition to targeting a number 10, the Red Devils are also believed to be eyeing a reliable striker after another difficult season for Rasmus Hojlund.
Cunha is Ruben Amorim’s top choice for the creative midfield role and it’s believed a deal is close to being finalised. A recent report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that Cunha is poised to officially join United when the season ends next week.
And now, French news outlet L’Equipe reveal that United are showing no signs of slowing down, with the club also aiming to secure the signing of Gyokeres.
Gyokeres is a player in demand after another prolific campaign that has seen him plunder a mind-boggling 39 goals and eight assists in 33 Liga Portugal appearances. Across all club competitions, he has notched 53 goals and 13 assists.
The Swede has been heavily linked to United over the past few months and this speculation has only intensified since Amorim succeeded Erik ten Hag in the Old Trafford dugout.
Amorim of course knows Gyokeres well from their time working together at Sporting. Gyokeres is also thought to be on Arsenal’s radar but earlier on Tuesday, the reliable Fabrizio Romano explained that United remain in the race to sign the 26-year-old.
L’Equipe have given a slight update and point out, “Uniteds have already completed the signing of Matheus Cunha , but are still hoping to be active in the attacking sector. The trail leading to Viktor Gyökeres, which began several weeks ago, remains very active.”
“Once the European Cup final is played, the English [club] will once again accelerate in an attempt to sign the Swedish striker.
L’Equipe add that United are “the first major European club to have made a concrete move” for Gyokeres.
It’s understood the player and his camp are eager for his future to be sorted very quickly and the fact that other suitors are taking their time could benefit United.
It has been suggested that Sporting will allow Gyokeres to leave for a fee of £58.9 million, despite his €100 million release clause.
