Manchester United have fired a subtle jab at England boss Sarina Wiegman following her latest controversial remarks on Maya Le Tissier.
Le Tissier enjoying another excellent season
Le Tissier enjoyed a fantastic 2024/25 campaign, helping United keep 13 clean sheets in 22 WSL appearances.
The skipper was a constant feature in United’s solid backline, playing a crucial role as the club booked their place in the Champions League and reached the FA Cup final.
However, she was oddly overlooked by Wiegman for the UEFA European Women’s Champions, which England won after beating Spain in the final. Wiegman demonstrated a clear preference for other defenders ahead of Le Tissier.
But, this did not deter the United star, who has started the new campaign in spectacular fashion.
So far this term, United have the best defensive record in the WSL (three goals conceded in six games), alongside table leaders Chelsea. Marc Skinner’s side have also racked up seven clean sheets from 11 games across all competitions.
Following Millie Bright’s international retirement and Leah Williamson’s absence due to injury, England appear to have a huge gap in one of the two centre-back positions.
Despite Le Tissier’s heroics at club level, Wiegman’s reluctance to use her has been puzzling. Even more bizarre is that the 55-year-old coach has primarily deployed Le Tissier in a full-back role.
Wiegman emphasised this stance once again during a press conference after announcing the England squad for the upcoming internationals.
Wiegman’s stance on Le Tissier
Wiegman told reporters [via GOAL], “She plays centre-back every single game and has good performances, but for us her first position is still as a right full-back.”
“But we also know she can play centre-back.”
United seemingly picked up on these remarks and made no secret of how they felt.
The club’s official X account posted a message which read, “Maya Le Tissier has started 104 games for United. 103 of them have been at centre-back.”
