Former Manchester United academy player Alvaro Fernandez Carreras has scored again amid rumours his former side may try and sign him this winter.
The Spaniard left Old Trafford permanently in the summer after failing to make a senior first team appearance.
The move was seen as a strange decision for United to take considering their glaring lack of left back options but they did insert a buy-back clause in the deal for a reported €20 million.
The Red Devils have been linked to a plethora of left back options but Nuno Mendes would cost €60 million and Milos Kerkez would also not come cheap, especially in January.
Therefore the former academy player could become a cost-effective, realistic option in the January window, especially if some money can be made from player sales as Casemiro seems to be inching towards a move to Saudi Arabia.
Carreras continued his highly impressive form with another goal in SL Benfica’s 3-0 victory over SC Braga in the Taça da Liga semi-final.
The youngster picked the ball up outside the box before shifting past a defender to arrow an expertly driven shot with his lethal left foot into the bottom corner of the goal to give his side a 2-0 lead after just 28 minutes of action.
Carreras was outstanding on the evening as he received a score of 8.2 for his night’s work.
As well as his goal, he completed all five of his long ball attempts and had a passing accuracy of 79%.
He was also a massive threat down the left hand side, completing four out of five of his dribble attempts.
The 21 year old was also a major contributor in defence, winning seven ground duels and making three tackles and two interceptions.
The sensational performance was just one in a long line of impressive showings in this campaign as he has played in 26 matches in all competitions, scoring three and providing two assists in a very productive season so far.
He has caught the attention of European giants such as Bayern Munich and Real Madrid and United may need to act fast if they want to secure the services of their former star as his reputation continues to rise in Portugal and across Europe.
