Toone named WSL Player of the Month

Congratulations to Ella Toone, who has been named Player of the Month in the Women’s Super League, for January.

It was an excellent opening to 2025 for Ella, who returned from a two-month lay-off due to a calf injury and netted a goal in our 7-0 Adobe Women’s FA Cup thrashing of West Bromwich Albion.

Toone then took the top-flight by storm, scoring a hat-trick inside 46 minutes as United won the Manchester derby at the Etihad Stadium, 4-2.

After defeat to City in the quarter-final of the League Cup, our homegrown forward was also on target in our second, and final, league outing of the month, a 3-0 home success over Brighton & Hove Albion.

And it’s clear that, after a difficult end to the year – both on the pitch and personally – Ella is back to her best.

“I’m so happy, I’m enjoying my football, and I know that’s what I can do when I’m enjoying it,” said Toone after her treble.

“To score against City, as a United fan, means a lot. I haven’t scored against City before, so it was nice to get a hat-trick – I’m buzzing and want to continue performing like this, with that positivity and that freedom.”

This is the second time that Ella has been crowned the WSL’s Player of the Month, with her previous win coming in December 2021.

She also took home the club’s Player and Goal of the Month prizes for January and will be hoping to continue her rich vein of form when we visit Wolves in the FA Cup fifth round on Saturday (17:15 GMT kick-off).
