This January arrival has transformed United’s defence, INEOS deserve immense credit – report

After a turbulent 18-month reign, Manchester United finally decided to pull the plug on the failed Ruben Amorim project. After dilly-dallying between Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Michael Carrick, INEOS opted to bring in the former midfielder due to concerns about the Norwegian’s backroom staff. There were no issues when naming Carrick’s support team, which included intriguing additions in the form of Steve Holland and Jonathan Woodgate. The former Real Madrid star has impressed members of United’s backline with his work ethic and personalised coaching. Jonathan Woodgate’s coaching masterclass As revealed by The Sun, the former England international regularly takes Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez aside to work on their aerial duel-winning abilities, including at set-pieces. Even the younger members of the defence have received individualised coaching sessions from the former Middlesbrough boss, with Ayden Heaven and Leny Yoro learning the tips and tricks needed to win two-on-one duels. “Sources who have watched Woodgate on the grass say he is a brilliant defensive coach. At United, Woodgate takes centre backs Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez to one side during the pre-match warm-ups to drill them on their heading. “Woodgate also has Maguire and Martinez jostling with each other to win aerial duels. Defenders have benefited immensely “Away from the cameras, Woodgate and Jonny Evans have worked with Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven on their technique in two-on-one drills.” The work has certainly paid dividends with the Red Devils keeping two clean sheets in five games, while conceding only five times during this period. He also reportedly played a key role in guiding the United centre-backs on how to deal with the threat of Erling Haaland. The 20-time English league champions ended up keeping a clean sheet against Manchester City, while thoroughly dominating them in all aspects of the game. United have tough call on their hands United will hope that Jonathan Woodgate and his colleagues can continue their excellent work as Carrick seeks to guide the Old Trafford side back into the Champions League. If the season aim is realised, INEOS will find it extremely difficult not to consider him for the permanent job. Senior United superstars have already had their say on the matter.
