‘Things can change very quickly’: Journo shares what he’s now hearing about Amorim’s future on Thursday afternoon

Ruben Amorim is under increasing pressure to turn Manchester United’s form around – or else risk suffering the same fate as Erik ten Hag and his predecessors.

Two Premier League defeats in the opening four matches and a second-round Carabao Cup exit have led to Amorim overseeing United’s worst start to a season in 33 years.

Last season, the Reds recorded their lowest top-flight finish in 51 years when they had slumped to 15th in the table by the end of the term. That, plus their Europa League final defeat at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur, set in stone that there would be no European football being played at Old Trafford in 2025/2026.

In the aftermath of the dismal campaign, fans were clinging onto the hope that Amorim would be able to get the best out of his players and really get his system successfully into place whilst they had only one game a week to account for.

They’re still waiting for that to be the case, though. Meanwhile the likes of Thomas Frank at Spurs has already secured back-to-back league wins in his first month in the dugout in North London.

In fact, Frank only needs to manage five more league wins to equal Amorim’s record of eight in the 10 months he’s been at the helm.

What one journalist is hearing about Amorim’s job security

Amorim does retain the backing of INEOS chiefs for now, although it remains to be seen just how much their faith may wither if the situation continues as it is in the coming weeks.

“The feeling within Manchester United is still to back Ruben Amorim, so he has that board support, but it’s Manchester United, and if you have 3 or 4 bad games in a row, things can obviously change very quickly,” Ben Jacobs told The United Stand this afternoon.

“Within the Manchester United hierarchy, my understanding is they feel they’ve built a team good enough to at worst qualify for European football. Their best-case scenario is to contend for the top four or top five and the Champions League.

“What I do think is if we get towards the festive period, if the season progresses whether short term or medium term, and they’re not on course for top five, top six, Europa League at worst, then Ruben Amorim is going to be under pressure.”
