“They think so highly of him”: Ex-United man backs ball-hungry starlet to succeed at club despite strong loan exit rumours

A former Manchester United star has backed Toby Collyer to succeed at Old Trafford despite suggestions that he is set for a loan move this summer.

Collyer poised to head out on loan

Collyer has enjoyed a gradual rise at United since joining the side from Brighton and Hove Albion in 2022.

United warded off significant competition from the likes of Chelsea and Brentford to land the highly-rated midfield prospect.

He wasted no time in cementing himself in the youth ranks and penned a new United contract last summer. Erik ten Hag was personally present at the signing ceremony to witness it and congratulate the player.

Collyer made his senior debut for United in the Community Shield loss to Manchester City. However, his momentum was halted by injuries, which limited him to just 13 appearances last term. Collyer missed 28 games with separate physical issues.

A recent report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that Collyer is expected to be loaned out this summer.

The player himself admitted that he is open to a temporary exit as he seeks to gain regular first-team minutes elsewhere. He insisted that he will hold discussions with the club and Ruben Amorim to understand what his role is in the side. Only then will he make a final decision.

But, former United goalkeeper Tim Howard has claimed that Collyer can still succeed at United if given opportunities and time.

Howard lends support to Collyer

Speaking on NBC Sports [as quoted by Manchester Evening News], Howard explained, “I’m interested in how Collyer fits in here.”

“They think so highly of him as a central midfield player. He gets attracted to the ball, he likes to be on the ball.”

“Does he have enough to play at this level? I think he does, but it’s going to be about time and opportunity, really.”

Meanwhile, United are back in pre-season action in the early hours of Thursday morning when they take on Bournemouth at Soldier Field in Chicago.
