“There remains a split at Manchester United:” Amorim and Wilcox in disagreement over long-time striker target

Manchester United appear to be in an internal scuffle as manager Ruben Amorim and technical director Jason Wilcox butt heads over the prospect of signing Liam Delap.

Identified as a potential summer signing, Delap has been Ipswich Town’s leading striker this season.

Man United have taken a massive interest in Delap if reports are to be believed, with the club reportedly holding face-to-face talks with the English forward.

But even while United allegedly believe that they lead the race to sign the striker, it appears that not everybody in the club is so keen on signing Delap.

“There remains a split at Manchester United over their plans for their new striker,” transfer insider Graeme Bailey told United In Focus.

“Liam Delap has emerged as their top target for their footballing department, with technical director Jason Wilcox convinced that the Ipswich Town striker is the best option for the club.”

“However, Amorim and his coaching staff believe that a ready-made number nine would be the better route for them to take as a team,” the report concluded.

Clearly, United will need to reach a consensus before making a final decision on Delap.

It just so happens that retired Premier League striker Darren Bent appears to agree with Amorim’s assessment, as The Peoples Person previously noted.

He claimed that it “would be a little bit of a concern to go from Ipswich, who were in the Championship last season, to Manchester United and be expected to lead the line and score the goals.”

This shows that Amorim is not alone in his concern over signing a player who is not experienced, particularly since there are no proven strikers at United at present.

Fortunately, it appears that the club is closing in on Matheus Cunha, meaning that Amorim can rest assured that he will have at least one proven number nine to select in his squad next season.
