‘The most important goal of my career’

It is the one-year anniversary of Amad’s memorable Emirates FA Cup quarter-final winner against Liverpool at Old Trafford.

We pondered whether 17 March would be remembered as St. Amad’s Day for some Reds fans, in addition to St. Patrick’s Day, because of his feat in securing a memorable 4-3 extra-time win over our fiercest rivals.

Of course, the victory would also enable us to continue on the road to Wembley, where we won the trophy with a 2-1 triumph over neighbours Manchester City.

Everybody will have their own recollections of that mad moment, regrettably a great degree of press-box etiquette was lost in the mayhem, and 12 months have already passed since a strike that has been watched over and over and over again by United supporters.

During an extensive feature with a recent edition of Inside United, the official club magazine, we asked Amad to look back on key images of his career, so far.

The Ivory Coast international may have spoken a lot about his most famous strike but was keen to reiterate just how big an event was for him.

“When I speak about this moment, it’s like I’m speaking about something that’s happened 10 years ago,” he said. “But it was only last season!

“This moment is the best goal, the most important goal, right now, in my career because of the feeling of the game, the atmosphere on the pitch, the team, we were playing against Liverpool.

“So, scoring that goal in the last minute meant a lot for me and we won the FA Cup at the end, so it was unbelievable. I was so happy to score but, firstly, I was happy for my team-mates because we weren’t in a good position at that moment.

“I was so happy to score and, at the end, we won the FA Cup, so it was unbelievable.”

Amad looked over key photos of his career so far in an in-depth interview with Inside United.

When asked if it was the best experience he has had yet at Old Trafford, he replied: “I would say yes, for the moment, here but I enjoy every moment at the club since I arrived.”

Of course, since that fateful day, Amad has also scored a derby winner at the Etihad Stadium and also the equalising goal at Anfield against Liverpool this season.

Although our no.16 is currently sidelined due to injury, head coach Ruben Amorim expressed some hope that Amad may return before the end of the current campaign.

Meanwhile, we’ll always celebrate this day, when it comes around each year!
