Ruben Amorim isn’t sure whether or not Noussair Mazraoui will be able to return to action before the international break.

The Manchester United full-back has not been involved since the final day of last season, when he limped off during the first half of our 2-0 win over Aston Villa.

Mazraoui did not travel on the post-season tour to Asia and, although he was named in the squads that travelled to Sweden and the United States over the summer, he was absent for each of the games.

Now, while it seems the former Ajax defender is approaching full fitness again, the boss is being cautious before our meetings with Grimsby Town and Burnley.

“No, maybe he is going to return next week, we will see,” Amorim told reporters who asked about the Morocco international on Sunday.

“But he’s near, we are just finishing some drills with him to be sure that he’s not going to have another problem.”

Lisandro Martinez is also set to miss the trip to Cleethorpes, as he continues to recover from the knee injury he suffered in February.

Amorim could use Wednesday’s fixture as an opportunity to rotate, with less than 72 hours separating the trip to Lincolnshire and Burnley’s visit in the Premier League.

Benjamin Sesko is vying for a place in the starting XI, after appearing from the bench against both Arsenal and Fulham.

Andre Onana returned to the squad at Craven Cottage after injury, while Kobbie Mainoo and Joshua Zirkzee will also be keen to be involved for the first time this campaign.

GRIMSBY TEAM NEWS

Town are unbeaten in their opening six fixtures of the 2025/26 season, although they were held to a 1-1 draw by Accrington Stanley at the weekend.

Doug Tharme, Kieran Green and Jamie Walker were absent at the Wham Stadium due to injury, but captain Danny Rose and Jude Soonsup-Bell were included in a matchday squad for the first time this term, with the former being brought on with 10 minutes to play.

“The truth is that they’re probably not ready,” said manager David Artell after the game in Lancashire.

“We didn’t have much of an option, though, with the injuries we picked up this week. Rosey played the last 10 minutes, but we don’t know how much more he would be able to handle at this point, so it shouldn’t surprise the fans if he is not involved in the next week or two.

“It was needs-must in this situation, but we’ll keep working to get them fitter and sharper, and hopefully they’ll stay injury-free.”
