Tactical analysis: United will defeat Brighton so long as they don’t forget these two vital principles

Manchester United are in for a stern test when they host Brighton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford on Saturday evening.

Man United find themselves in ninth place on the Premier League table, with Brighton just one position behind as just one point separates the teams.

While United are understandably riding the high of defeating Liverpool at Anfield last weekend, they will need their wits about them when facing their challenging opponents from England’s south coast.

There are two crucial considerations that United need to be aware of if they are to get the better of Brighton in their Premier League showdown.

Brighton’s efficiency

In late September, Brighton shocked Chelsea with a 3-1 victory at Stamford Bridge. While they only had 40.5% possession, Brighton took 12 shots, ultimately scoring all three of their goals in the 77th minute and later.

Despite seeing less of the ball than their opponents, Brighton remained determined to find the back of the net, overcoming a deficit to silence Chelsea in front of their home fans.

Back in August, events unfolded in a similar manner against Manchester City. This time as hosts, Brighton conceded a goal in the first half yet managed to claw their way back in the 67th minute before scoring the winner in the 89th minute to secure a 2-1 triumph.

During this match, Brighton managed to maintain just 36.3% possession against a dominant City, yet still took 12 shots – the same as the visitors.

In both matches, we saw efficiency on the part of Brighton, whereby they took a sizeable amount of shots despite lacking possession, thereby showing their raw desire to find the back of the net. Furthermore, they fell behind in both games, completing late, second-half comebacks on both occasions to display their resolve and healthy attention spans.

Given United’s tendency to concede goals more openly in the second half (eight of their 12 goals conceded this Premier League season have come in the second half), they will need to have their wits about them when facing the ever-alert Brighton attack.

In fact, this statistic leads to the next consideration that United must think about.

Tendency to lose focus

As exhibited by the aforementioned statistic, United have a tendency to lose their attention as the match wears on.

This isn’t just exhibited by their defensive figures, though. Of their 11 Premier League goals this season, seven came in the first half, with just four scored in the second.

This would theoretically mean that if United were to concede to Brighton in the second half, they would seem less likely to claw their way back into the match if historical data proves true.

Still, there is another way in which United have exhibited some worrying inconsistency.

The Liverpool victory marks the first time that Ruben Amorim has secured back-to-back victories with United. Such inconsistency is even more evident given that they impressively defeated Chelsea 2-1 earlier this season, only to get thumped 3-1 by Brentford the following match. It’s important to remember that while Chelsea are in fifth place, Brentford are all the way down in 13th, making this run of form nonsensical.

Ultimately, United have a tendency to become complacent, both as a match wears on and during the course of the season, especially off the back of a big win.

Should United keep their wits about them and defend strongly against Brighton’s witty attack, there’s no doubt that Amorim will be able to extend his winning streak to a new high.
