Skinner explains Toone absence

Marc Skinner confirmed that a late calf injury in training was what ruled Ella Toone out of Manchester United’s win against Leicester in the WSL on Sunday afternoon.

Toone was fit and ready to go when Skinner addressed the media at his pre-match press conference on Friday morning, but a problem cropped up the following day.

The staff are still waiting for further assessment on the injury, with uncertainty at this stage as to whether Tooney will be available for upcoming games against Everton in the League Cup in midweek, and Chelsea in the WSL next Sunday.

“It’s just an injury,” the boss said after beating Leicester, explaining the reason for her unexpected omission from the matchday squad.

“She had a calf issue and pulled out of training yesterday [Saturday]. I don’t how it is yet, but she might be missing for these games this week.

“She’s obviously a big miss for us, but we wish her the very best and she’ll get back to health very quickly.”

Toone had appeared in a record 96 consecutive WSL games prior to the trip to the east midlands, a feat she had originally achieved last month during our home win against Tottenham Hotspur.

The 25-year-old England star has more United appearances (170) and goals (53) than anyone else, and remains one of only three ‘originals’ from the reformed squad of 2018.
