Seven ex-Reds in Hall of Fame contention

Seven former Manchester United players are in the frame to be the latest inductees into the Premier League Hall of Fame.

Fans can vote up until midday on Monday 15 September for two nominees to join the existing 24 members, who include the likes of Eric Cantona, Roy Keane, David Beckham, Wayne Rooney, Peter Schmeichel, Paul Scholes, Sir Alex Ferguson, Rio Ferdinand and Andy Cole.

The existing Hall of Famers will help make the final decision, in collaboration with the fan poll.

Here are the ex-Reds in contention…

MICHAEL CARRICK

Stylish midfielder who arrived from Tottenham Hotspur in 2006 and spent 12 years at Old Trafford. During that time, he won five Premier League titles under Ferguson and was voted our Players’ Player of the Year in 2012/13.

PATRICE EVRA

Outstanding left-back acquired from Monaco in 2006, he played 379 times for the club and was very popular with the supporters. He helped the Reds win five titles during his stay and is bidding to become the fifth Frenchman to be inducted, after Thierry Henry, Eric Cantona, Patrick Vieira and Arsene Wenger.

GARY  NEVILLE

Initially a central defender in the fabled Class of ’92 youth team, he broke into the senior side at right-back and eventually became an automatic choice for United and England. The one-club man racked up 602 appearances, the fifth-most in our entire history, and lifted the Premier League trophy eight times. Only former team-mates Ryan Giggs and Scholes have more winners’ medals.

MICHAEL OWEN

While much of his best work came at arch-rivals Liverpool, the former England marksman did secure his only Premier League title when at United, in 2010/11. A famous derby winner against Manchester City in 2009 was one highlight of his stint at Old Trafford. The 2001 Ballon d’Or winner also represented Newcastle United and Stoke City in the top flight.

TEDDY SHERINGHAM

The cultured centre-forward is synonymous with the Premier League, scoring the first goal in a live televised match in the division (for Nottingham Forest) and is still the oldest outfield player to net in it (aged 40). While he will also be remembered for his two stints with Spurs, the Treble-winner won three leagues on the trot after a trophyless maiden campaign in Manchester and was named PFA Player of the Year in 2000/01.

Can Edwin van der Sar follow this man, Peter Schmeichel, into the Hall of Fame?

EDWIN VAN DER SAR

Although he came to United late in his career, the giant Dutchman had a huge influence here and is in the discussion for our best-ever goalkeeper. The former Fulham no.1 provided the solid base for four championship-winning teams under Ferguson and is looking to follow fellow keepers Schmeichel and Petr Cech into the Hall of Fame.

NEMANJA VIDIC

A phenomenal defender who formed a legendary partnership with Ferdinand and can count five Premier League titles among his 15 trophies as a Red. The Serbian captained the side with great distinction and appeared 211 times in the division between 2006 and 2014, forging a reputation as one of the toughest centre-backs in the game.

Should Nemanja Vidic join his defensive pal Rio Ferdinand, pictured here, in the Hall of Fame?
