Ruben sums up his philosophy in one word

Everybody wants to know the footballing philosophy of a manager or head coach.

This is certainly no different when it comes to Ruben Amorim, Manchester United’s new boss, who leaves Sporting after much success in Lisbon with his previous club.

How does he see the game? What is he striving for? What are the main threads running through his vision of how he wants his team to play?

It is often an impossible task to trim this down into a single answer. However, in Ruben’s first interview as United head coach, conducted with MUTV at Old Trafford, he was able to distil it into one word.

“In one word: team,” he said. “The team is the most important thing for me.”

This was one of his characteristics as a player, performing duties on behalf of the overall collective, whether that was operating in different positions or coming off the bench to good effect.

It is an ethos that has served him extremely well in his short time as a coach. You only need to witness the scenes in the Portuguese capital, following confirmation of his departure, to appreciate the bond and togetherness forged there with his staff and supporters.

Amorim now wants the Reds to be thinking the same: as one, and always putting the team first.

“If you work as a team, then the talent individually is going to shine,” he promised. “But if I have to explain the importance of everything, it is the character – the way we fight, the way we play, and we must have an identity. We have to. If our players take the shirt, they will know that it is the Manchester United team.

“Everybody thinks the same – running back, playing, enjoying [it]. This is what drives me. I can say the popular thing, which is to win. Everybody wants to win and I want to win with my players, with the fans but with an identity and one idea, that is the thing that I am focused on all the time.”

The first time we’ll start to see this philosophy is in the Premier League match at Ipswich Town on Sunday 24 November.
