Ruben Amorim says Rangers are typically British in their play style as we prepare for the SPL side’s visit this evening in the Europa League.
United are looking to all but confirm a top-eight finish in the group stage with victory at Old Trafford, with the onus firmly on aviding two extra games in the play-off round.
Amorim has stressed the importance of being allowed more time to work on his ideas but knows how much of a test Philippe Clement’s side will pose.
Ahead of the contest in M16, the 39-year-old spoke to MUTV by previewing the game and below you can both read, and watch, what he had to say…

AMORIM INTERVIEW | Ruben explains how important returning to winning ways would be to his squad…
Ruben, what a game on Thursday night as Rangers visit Old Trafford. Do you feel the excitement of the fans?
“Of course. They want us to win games, especially at home, in a different competition. We need to win it because it’s really important for the classification to try to avoid two games in the play-offs, to have more time to train. So everything is important in this moment so we want to win.”
How important would that be?
“It’s really important. Especially in the schedule like we have here in the Premier League with a lot of games. We can clean two weeks to work, so it’s really important.”
What do you know about Rangers?
“I know all the squad, the characteristics of the players, I know the players that will miss the game. They are also important players, to try and understand the new ones. They are very aggressive — they are British! So we expect a very difficult game, a very physical game, but we want also to improve the way we play the ball. We want to be more calm with the ball. We try to improve on that in this last training — it was the only one. So I expect a better performance.
So have you had a good response after a disappointing performance on Sunday?
“Yes. We didn’t have, like I said, a lot of time to work but they are ready, we are ready to win this match and, like I said, everything is important in this moment: the feeling of winning and especially to avoid the play-off.”
Any changes to your matchday squad?
“No. Vic is training but I prefer to do extra work today because I want him for a long time, not just to put him right away. For the rest, Luke is recovering really well. Mason Mount, it’s good to see them on the pitch. Just Vic, but he’s not in the squad.”
Rasmus has scored four goals in your two Europa League games with us, are you hoping for more of the same?
“Yes. He’s in the squad. We’ll see if he starts the game, I’m always expecting the best from my players.”
Bruno could be making his 50th Europa League appearance. How good is his availability, durability and fitness?
“It’s really important. He’s amazing. He’s always ready to play, of course you sometimes feel that he’s not fresh — it’s impossible! — but the availability of Bruno is really important in a league where you play in three days. And the impact that he has in the team, the calm he brings on the ball with the confidence, so it’s really important for us.”
