Rooney issues Monday morning Amorim sack prediction – as journos confirm his future’s now ‘in doubt’

Wayne Rooney does not believe Ruben Amorim will see out the remaining 18 months of his contract if Manchester United’s tumultuous form continues.Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Elland Road saw United drop points to teams ranked 16th or below in the Premier League table for the second successive game week, having slumped to the same result against Championship-bound Wolverhampton Wanderers at Old Trafford last Tuesday.Amorim’s record in the English top flight since taking the reins last November now stands at 15 wins, 13 draws and 19 losses in the 47 matches he’s overseen. After the full-time whistle had blown in Yorkshire, the United boss sent out a strong message in his post-match interview, saying: “I am not going to quit. I am going to do my job until another guy is coming here to replace me. “I am going to be the manager of this team, not just the coach. That is going to finish in 18 months and then everyone is going to move on. I came here to be the manager.” “I came here to be the manager of Manchester United, not to be the coach! pic.twitter.com/nDhmJT99kK — BeanymanSports (@BeanymanSports) January 4, 2026Ruben Amorim’s United future now ‘in doubt’(Photo by Richard Heathcote/Getty Images)Subsequent reports later in the night suggested tensions were, unsurprisingly, starting to grow at the club, particularly between Amorim and Sporting Director Jason Wilcox. You need to earn the right to be able to dictate exactly what happens at a football club, especially a club like Man United.“If [Pep] Guardiola comes into Man United, for instance, I don’t think anyone will question what players he wants to bring in, or the system [he wants to play]. I feel for him [Amorim] a little bit, but he is not Pep Guardiola. He’s not Jurgen Klopp.“He hasn’t got that history or that background, so I don’t think he should be speaking with that authority that he is. I think the words he’s saying are very confusing to me.” “I don’t think he should be speaking with that authority.” 😳 Wayne Rooney on Ruben Amorim’s comments after Man Utd’s 1-1 draw against Leeds 🗣️ Thoughts? 🤔 pic.twitter.com/S6yvu7dSEW — BBC Sport (@BBCSport) January 5, 2026 Footage courtesy of Beanyman Sports & BBC Sport.
