Manchester United have not had a lot to smile about in recent seasons from a sporting perspective. However, one player who put a smile on Old Trafford faithful’s faces was Kobbie Mainoo who came through the academy.

The young Englishman was elegance personified, impressing with his ability on the ball and his composure despite his tender age. Under Erik ten Hag, he showed a lot of quality and looked destined for greatness.

However, things have taken a turn for the worse since Ruben Amorim took over. The Portuguese tactician plays a system that needs only two midfielders and he doesn’t fancy starting Mainoo ahead of Bruno Fernandes or Casemiro.

Now, as per Team Talk, rivals Manchester City and Pep Guardiola have given a shock approval to make a move for Mainoo. The Spanish tactician fancies having the 20-year-old in his team despite the rivalry that exists between the two clubs.

There aren’t many players who cross the Manchester divide to move one way or the other and even more so, an academy graduate.

Thus, it comes as quite a surprise that the £45million star is being linked with a transfer to the Etihad.

The bottom line is that Mainoo is just 20 and has a huge future in the game. The midfielder would add a lot of quality to not just Man City but any other team in the Premier League, and it is a shame that Amorim doesn’t see it the seem way.

The coming months might be pivotal in dictating Mainoo’s future at Old Trafford. Although a cross-city move seems far-fetched at this point, the player might not stick around for long if he isn’t given proper opportunities to impress.

Let’s wait and see what plans Amorim has for the young starlet.

It would be criminal to waste a talent with Mainoo’s potential and only time will tell how things play out.
