Newcastle are reportedly poised to take a huge step in their efforts to beat Manchester United to the signing of RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko.
Sesko on United’s list
Having already secured deals for Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, United are now turning their attention to signing a striker. After missing out on several targets, Sesko currently appears to be their top priority.
Sesko, who plundered an impressive 21 goals in 45 appearances for Leipzig last season, was strongly pursued by Arsenal before the Gunners decided to swoop in for Viktor Gyokeres instead.
With a move to Arsenal no longer an option, it’s believed that Sesko has opened up to the prospect of joining United. The Red Devils have tracked the Slovenian for years now and have previously made unsuccessful attempts to land him.
But it seems that Sesko will finally get a transfer this summer. In addition to United, Newcastle are the other party aggressively working to snap up the 22-year-old.
Newcastle are facing a fight to keep Alexander Isak, who has informed them he wants to leave amidst interest from Liverpool. The Magpies have identified Sesko as the perfect replacement for Isak. A report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that Sesko prefers a switch to Old Trafford over Newcastle.
More recently, it emerged that United and Newcastle have both held initial talks with Sesko’s camp and presented their respective projects to him.
As the situation rumbles on, it’s being claimed that Newcastle are preparing an offer to Leipzig for Sesko.
Newcastle set to bid for Sesko
According to Foot Mercato journalist Santi Aouna, “Newcastle are preparing an opening bid in around of €72-74M million for RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Šeško.”
“Manchester United have also shown interest, but for now Newcastle are currently the most serious contenders for the player.”

Aouna also wrote for Foot Mercato, “Newcastle have been the big losers of the English summer transfer window so far. While there was the signing of Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest, the Magpies failed to secure Ekitike, who were overtaken by Liverpool, who are now targeting their own striker Alexander Isak.”
“They also saw Manchester City overtake them on goalkeeper James Trafford. Two blows that Newcastle will try to forget by sending a big offer to RB Leipzig for Benjamin Sesko. The Slovenian striker is patiently waiting for his turn in this transfer window, after seeing Gyokeres, Osimhen, Ekitike, and others change clubs.”
“The opening could come from Newcastle, who are planning to make an initial offer of around €73 million to snatch him from RB Leipzig. The German club knows they will be attacked for their player before the end of the transfer window.”
Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg adds that Sesko has been left impressed by United’s desire to add him to their ranks at Old Trafford.
Plettenberg notes that Leipzig want at least €80 for Sesko.

United may certainly find it hard to fork out such an amount without selling players.
