‘Ridiculous’: Old Trafford moment draws mixed reception as United star says no to fan request

Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot has become the subject of a heated fan debate after a recent pre-season outing.

Supporters outside Old Trafford were left with contrasting feelings following the team’s friendly against Fiorentina.

Some were pleased by the player’s conduct while others called it petty and unnecessary.

The disagreement has since spilled onto social media, where dozens of fans have offered opposing takes.

Posts ranged from praise for standing firm to frustration at what they saw as needless refusal.

The incident in question saw Dalot approached by fans seeking autographs after the match.

The Portugal international signed several items without hesitation but declined to sign shirt numbers, a type of memorabilia often resold at significant profit once printed and framed.

He made it clear his stance was to deter commercial autograph hunters.

Some supporters applauded him, saying it was right to protect against opportunists. “Well done Dalot, all these sellers are getting out of hand,” one post read. Another pointed out that “he was signing everything else though.”

Others were unimpressed, suggesting that a player on his reported £100,000-a-week salary should be more accommodating. One fan wrote: “100k a week and won’t help someone earn a few hundred quid.”

His latest decision shows a willingness to set personal limits, even if it risks upsetting sections of the fanbase.

The debate reflects a wider shift in how players balance fan engagement with protecting themselves from exploitation — a line that, as Dalot’s case shows, is not easy to draw.
