Resurgent £80m star only wants to play for United next season, refusing to hold talks with other clubs – report

Manchester United’s senior players have become cornerstones of the resurgence witnessed under Michael Carrick, who is yet to taste defeat as the club’s interim boss. Bruno Fernandes, Casemiro and Harry Maguire have all started in each of Carrick’s first five games in charge. However, the trio’s impressive form might be something that puts United in a dilemma as they head into another rebuild. It has been widely reported that Ineos want to trim United’s wage bill and reduce the average age of the squad. The Red Devils have already announced their decision to part ways with Casemiro, and both Fernandes and Maguire are facing uncertain futures at Old Trafford. Champions League qualification to dictate Harry Maguire’s future Harry Maguire is in the final six months of his deal at Manchester United, who spent £80 million to sign the central defender from Leicester City in 2019. According to Teamtalk, the England international is “increasingly expectant” of remaining at United beyond this season, with Champions League qualification being viewed as a “decisive factor” in sealing an agreement over a renewal. The report states: “With United back competing at the top end of the table, qualification for next season’s Champions League would significantly boost the likelihood of a new agreement being reached.” Several Serie A clubs are thought to be keen on handing the 32-year-old an opportunity to take on a new challenge in the summer. However, despite being eligible to open talks with overseas clubs since 1 January, the former United skipper has not entered negotiations with any foreign sides. Harry Maguire ready to make “giant sacrifice” to extend Manchester United stay It is believed Maguire’s “long-standing preference” has always been to stay at United, and he has “green-lit a major personal sacrifice to help bring an extension ever-closer.” The Englishman is one of the club’s best-paid players, taking home around £190,000 a week. The report claims he has informed the club through his advisors that he is willing to sign a new deal on significantly reduced terms.
