Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe flew into Carrington on Thursday, where he held talks with Ruben Amorim regarding the team’s troubling start to the season.
United’s tough start to the season
After a gruelling 2024/25 campaign that saw him lead United to a 15th-place Premier League finish, Amorim’s fortunes have shown little improvement this season.
United have won one, drawn one and lost two of their opening four top-flight fixtures. The Red Devils were also knocked out of the Carabao Cup by League Two outfit Grimsby Town in the second round of the competition.
The team’s most recent outing saw Amorim’s men humiliated by Manchester City in the derby. This has sparked fresh speculation over the Portuguese coach’s future.
After the final whistle, a defiant Amorim stressed that he will not alter his approach despite growing calls for him to do so.
He even claimed that United may have to sack him as he has no intention of compromising on his footballing principles.
Saturday’s showdown with Chelsea looms as a make-or-break fixture for Amorim’s tenure at Old Trafford.
The Athletic report that Ratcliffe flew to Carrington in a helicopter on Thursday for a number of meetings, including with Amorim.

The Athletic reveal, “United sources, speaking anonymously as they are not authorised to speak publicly on the matter, insisted Ratcliffe’s visit to Carrington was long planned and included time with Amorim.”
“However, the team’s form was on the agenda and Ratcliffe was seeking to work through issues facing Amorim at the club.”
It’s not clear whether Amorim’s job was discussed.
Following the Europa League final defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, Amorim stated that if the board no longer considered him the right man for the job, he would step aside immediately without seeking compensation.
However, should United pull the trigger and relieve him of his duties, it would cost them a staggering £12m.
